Natural Fiber Composites

Automotive Products

Interior automobile parts are the primary market for natural fiber composites (NFC), which are expected to continue rapid market penetration for the next five years. According to the Business Communications report, the market for NFC is growing at 9.9% per year.

One example of an interior automotive parts is headrests. Mercedes-Benz do Brasil employs Amazon island residents to make auto headrests. Almost any semi-rigid interior automobile component can be made of NFCs, including seat backs (2005 Ford), armrests and door panels (2005 Jeep), front and rear panels (2005 Mercedes), trunk liners (various) and headliners (Mack trucks).

A few exterior automobile components are made of NFCs, including engine and transmission covers for the Mercedes-Benz Travego coach. In the Travego case, the NFC parts cost 5% less than if they were fiberglass.
